HDI's laser-driven 3D HDTV hits production, should ship next

Post by Jadentheman »

It the tv everyone one here wants.

Polarized glasses=FTW Full HD per eye with tons of color and awesomness
:woot but with polarized glasses
When we first caught wind of HDI's "world's first laser-based 3D HDTV," we were cautiously hopeful that it'd be ready to go (at least as a prototype) at CES 2010. Looks like we may actually get our wish, as the company has today announced that its magical set has reached the manufacturing stage. What's it all mean? It means that the set is being fast-tracked for release in 2010, meaning that you're just months away from having stereoscopic 1,920 x 1,080 content in your living room... provided there's actually any programming to view, that is. Of course, it'll handle the 2D stuff too, and the twin RGP LCoS micro-display imagers in there ought to provide plenty of crisp imagery regardless of the source. We're still not sure if the Woz-approved 100-inch version that's being shown to curious onlookers is the size that'll be pumped out to the mainstream, but we're hoping for at least a few smaller siblings for those of us with last names other than Kennedy, Gates, Buffet and Ellison.

Not only is this the best 3D display of all time, its the best 2D display as well. At 1000Hz that means that you could actually see the full framerate of any game on the market instead of being capped at 60Hz. This is huge. I don't even know what a game would look like at 300 real FPS, do you?

Really seems like the most suitable future solution for 3d and 2d tv's. Anybody know how they works btw? According to some articles it's about rearprojection but then how to make laserdisplays with only a few mm's thickness? As i see it there's probably at least two different laserdisplaytechnologies.

The display isn't flat like the latest generation of plasmas, LCD and OLEDs. The display is still a thick rear-projection system.
The diagram showing how the projector works is extremely interesting, thanks to a series of semi-reflecting mirrors and the dual LCOS, this projector is capable of outputting the full dual images with circular polarisation out of a single lens.

This projector would be wonderful not only for a rear-projection TV, but also for a true front-projector as well.

I would love to see them shipping a package containing both (front) projector + silverscreen.
Passive 3D forever !
DIY polarised dual-projector setup :
2x Epson EH-TW3500 (2D 1080p)
Xtrem Screen Daylight 2.0, for polarized 3D
3D Vision gaming with signal converter : VNS Geobox 501

Thanks for some clarification. Googling around for articles regarding lasertv's were really confusing since some of them says the displays were like 3-4 mm's thick and i couldn't make that fit in any way. And the answer for the principle was actually on the site (just found it lol  ): http://www.engadget.com/photos/hdis-las ... ar/2408096" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and it seem to be a really interesting solution. :woot

I have an issue with that TV...

I just realized how big 100inch is. That TV won't fit in my living room, let along take the corner in the staircase up to my flat.
Will they also make a 50/60" version ?

Oh yeah. 100 inches is a bit much. 50" would be nice.

100 inches is just perfect or just below what i'd really like. 8)
There are probably two big issues with this at home. :P
1'st - Space: Myself i put down a project some time ago about building a backprojection tv with passive technology and mirrors to save space. This tv would had become too big for my room even if using two mirrors. So i guess it's the same with the lasertelly in the article.
2'nd - price: I wonder how much it would cost. I recently saw a 100" tv showcased at mediamarkt and the pricelabel for that was 800000 skr (~110000 usd).... And it was not even a 3d-telly...

That why I think it will shrink down to 50-60 inches like panasonics because it's more reasonable. They should make a front projector too.
