I’ve officially hit my 2-year mark on MTBS, and it got me thinking — when I first joined, I was neck-deep in 3D displays, experimenting with every headset I could get my hands on, and chasing that elusive “presence” in VR that people kept raving about. Two years (and quite a few firmware updates) later, I figured it’s time to take a breather and ask:
Has VR (or 3D tech in general) lived up to the hype… for you?
For me, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. The immersion is real — no question — and titles like Half-Life: Alyx or even older gems like Lone Echo made me feel like I was inside another world. But on the flip side, I still find myself missing the crisp, no-fuss visual quality of a solid 3D monitor experience. VR is amazing, but it’s not always comfortable for long sessions.
I’m also noticing that some of my friends who were super hyped in 2021 have drifted away from VR entirely, either because of motion sickness, setup fatigue, or just lack of compelling new content. Meanwhile, I’ve doubled down, modding older non-VR titles and playing with alternate display methods just to see how far I can push the tech.
So I’m curious:
- Have you stuck with VR/3D or stepped back a bit?
- What hardware are you currently running?
- Any surprises — good or bad — you’ve had in your own journey?
