MTBS-TV, Interview With Optoma

Post by Neil »

[youtube-hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reoGMRkltAk[/youtube-hd]

This is an interview with Wing Chung, Director of the Product Engineering Division for Optoma. Optoma was very happy to hear about our excitement for stereoscopic 3D gaming, and made this interview possible.

Don't want to spoil the surprise, but are you equally impressed by the price tag?

Regards,
Neil

Er, sorry for ruining the surprise more than a month ago  http://mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5042

Now does it do both checkerboard 3D and frame-sequential/pageflip, like the Acer projector? http://mtbs3d.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5267

Somebody give us an affordable 1080p 3D projector! That would be a nice surprise.

I have the Optoma Pro350W and it does full page flip at 720p at 120hz. It was kind of hard to understand the guest speaker but I did hear the word "Nvidia" several times so I am very encouraged by this and hope we will see "formal" driver support sooner than March. For those interested, it does work when detected as a "CRT" in Nvidia setup. One correction though. DLP Link doesn't work by using any type of emitter or dongle and the projector doesn't have a connector to plug the emitter into. The video stream is actually encoded somehow and an optical sensor on the glasses senses this optical encoding and tells the LCD Glasses to shutter at the correct frequency. This allows the projector to control eye swap which is a selection in the Optoma menu. Very cool actually and maybe this type of "marking" would allow emitter free viewing on more than just projectors. What i haven't been able to find out yet is:

1. Does the projector automatically encode the content when it senses 120hz input?
2. Does DLP Link require 3D Driver support from Nvidia and others to operate?
3. Will AMD be able to support this as well?
4. Will DDD and IZ3D be able to support this?

Always more questions! Thanks Neil for the constant flow of interviews. You did a great job at CES this year!

DLP-Link is a standard, it works with both Front and Rear Projection DLPs. It also works with current Samsung and Mits DLPs, confirmed by XpanD.

The display uses white-light, which DLP-Link compatible glasses use to sync. Currently, Bit Cauldron, RealD (CE5s), and XpanD (X102s) are DLP-Link compatible.

So basically, the answer to #2 is no, there are no special drivers needed. As long as the displays gets a 3D signal (compatible with the display), it knows what to do.

I have heard you HAVE to wear the nVidia Vision glasses upside-down for games pn the HD66. Which to me is like your Meal Deal you pay for doesn't come with frys and a drink. Terrible analogy...but hey its still early.

I have come across those, and I think it's odd. A 3D projector for Wii? Also, what the heck is the difference between the HD66 ($699) and the GT720 ($699)?

If I am in the market for a 720p or 1080p 3D projector and haven't bought one yet, I'll want one that supports the new 3D (HDMI 1.4, "3D over HDMI", etc.) standard, in addition to stereoscopic 3D gaming.

Looks decent but I'll wait for a 1080P version that is *CONFIRMED* to work with 3D Blu-Ray and Nvidia 3D Vision.

Nvidia lists that projector as supported:

WOOT WOOT I'm contacting mr Nilson to see if I can get one of the jdomes. This is going to be fun.

If I remember, does it have to be a GT720 manufactured after January of this year?

Thanks.

It needs to be manufactured after August 2010 as per this post:
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?show ... try1196432" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You are probably better off getting something that is known to be 100% supported, like the Acer H5360 or the newer model that supports HDMI 1.4.
