Check out some highlights from the first day of the 3D Entertainment Summit. This is focused on the first gaming panel, and a private Electronic Arts Need For Speed SHIFT event held the same evening.

Neil

Hi Neil!

why you deleted my 3d rendering? Yesterday I posted here one side by side image but was deleted.

I would like to know the reason.

best regards

My understanding from watching an earlier panel discussion was that Neil/MTBS had tested pre-release builds of Shift for EA to enable them to eliminate 3d anomalies (which I was really excited about as it seemed like a really positive step). However it seems that the release version of the game still has major problems in 3D. What went wrong?
Cheers,
DD

Hi DickDastardly,

Based on your link, I'm guessing you are talking about NVIDIA, so let me explain what happened. You are correct that we had the benefit of receiving the game long before NVIDIA, DDD, and iZ3D.

Last year, when I presented at SIGGRAPH, we profiled Epic Games' Unreal Tournament 3 with Mark Rein, and Bioshock from 2K Games running in stereoscopic 3D running on iZ3D's drivers and a RealD 3D projection system. Awesome!

This year, we wanted to diversify. NVIDIA has had their share of limelight and jointly presented with us before, iZ3D had their turn, and I thought it would be great to give DDD a shot as we never worked with them before and wanted to show a diverse industry.

Priority number one was getting the game to look good for SIGGRAPH, and we arranged for DDD to get a pre-release copy of the game. Since resources were limited and there was great secrecy around the event, only one driver developer could benefit at the time. That said, similar to the way Capcom and EIDOS arranged pre-release game versions for NVIDIA, it is clear there are industry-wide benefits to be had here, and I would endorse pre-releases for all S-3D driver solutions and by all game developers.

Since the game was released, I'm told NFS SHIFT has been patched with Z-axis coordinates for NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision, and iZ3D is actively working on a new profile for their drivers. I do not have a time line for this patch or NVIDIA's next driver, but MTBS wants to see support for all, not one. The thread you linked to already suggests a helpful patch for NFS, so we will see.

Neil
