IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles

I would love to play this game (in stereo), but after hours/days of testing, i gave up with it.

On first i tried ogl-mode, because i?ve seen on some forums, that it should work. But on my system, it?s just crashing by activating stereo... (tried nearly each gfx-option-combination)

Second tried was DirectX-Mode. I get no crash, but no 3d as well.

Perhaps someone has the hint for me? :-)

XP prof. 32, 6800 GT tried on many diff. detonator-versions

Edit:
It?s working now with ForceWare 160.03 - no problems at all, 100% 3D - very nice!

Just don't activate the map ('M') in stereo, this gives me an immediate CTD.

Have you tried it with 160.03? As i wrote it in the edit-section, it?s running now - perfectly.

Because i?ll play only in stereo, i haven?t spent a lot of time to this game.
Map is working...

Hi Hugo, this is a great news!!
We all waited for years to get Il2 to work in stereo!
I suppose you tried 1946 version (il2FB + AEP+ PF+1946)
What is the exact driver match?

FW 160.03 + Stereo Beta 158.22?

Or what else?

Thx in advance for you help and information.

My system specs:
P4 3,2 Prescott
2GB
GeForce XFX 7600GT
Win Xp Pro

Yes, the new drivers fix the CTD when using Map ('M').

I'm using FW 160.03 + Stereo Beta 158.22.

I run IL2 FB/AEP with the latest patches. I'd be interested to hear about
how things work with FB/AEP/PF, PF-standalone, as well as with '46.

With 6% separation, the reticle is fully-ghosted in 3D; this seems to be
correct to me, but means that I have to switch to a reticle view (which
looks great) in order to shoot at anything.

Up until now, I've only been using S-3D to look at game tracks (which
have always looked great in Stereo 3D) and have gotten random CTDs.

I now have no excuse for not flying in S-3D, I guess I'll have to
map a joystick button to toggle the reticle (targetting) view.

--- Thanks all

yep - forceware 160.03 and stereo 158.22.

And youre right, i?ve had to wait for some years to see it running...

Ok, it works quite well.
I had to disable Hardware shaders (=0) in conf.ini because i saw hard flickering and partially balck screen.
Did you experience it too?

Could you post your conf.ini in the part of OGL features?
I suppose you play it in OGL mode and not DX.

Thanks in advance.
This game is too beautiful to play it al low quality!

Sorry for the late reply, I have been checking things out.

Neither of you guys say what version you are playing. Can
you let me know before I need to install PF or 1946 please?

Anyhoo, FB/AEP is better with hardware shaders ON, but I
also get ground object artifacts (bad tearing, which I can't
get rid of by toggling off S-3D). So IL2 campaigns (all of
the missions involve flying 200m above the ground) are out.
Hurricane missions seem to be okay, except I sometimes
encounter ground objects that mess things up so much
that I can't find the runway to land (I tried getting the
auto-pilot to land the plane, but it just headed for a way
point that I'd skipped because I was RTB'ing - being out of
ammo or something - so not a solution to my problem in
this particular case).

Hugo, my settings are much the same as yours, except I
also have 'Water=1' (I tried higher settings but didn't care
for them much) and 'Forest=3' (I think you might like this one).

So, all in all, I'm a HUGE fan of flying in S-3D, altho' I am still
a n00b so it's sometimes just information overload, but a fun
ride (into the ground) nevertheless.

Thanks to all for any follow-ups.

I have the 162.50 Stereo + 163.75 FW and the only change I've seen at all since 94.24 is that the 'M' map key does not cause a crash.
For AEP v 2.04, I'm still getting trees and buildings rendered at screen depth, so you get double images of them as with screen-depth huds and crosshairs.
However, with FB v 1.0 (unpatched retail) this is not the case. Apparently every version after that uses some optimized engine code that doesn't jive with Stereo. So if you can live with plain old FB 1.0 you're still in business.

From what I read on IL2 forums, they disabled the ablilty to do stereo 3d in the patches. The makers of the game believed that 3d would be a "hack" and give some players an advantage in multiplayer. They also cheated on some of the cockpit artwork and did not render a 3d cockpit so things may look strange in 3d.

I am not sure which versions of IL2 will work in 3d after being patched so please post any positive results.

I'm playing il2:1946 with it's patch in S-3D. I have to disable perfect landscape. But everything, except far planes, are correctly rendered. Looks like when a plane is far, it's not rendered in 3D, but as a 2D spot that it's always rendered at screen depth.
So runways, trees, cross-hairs... everything is right, and without crashes. A real pleasure.

Crim3, do you know if it works in mulitplayer in s3d? I have heard that the game restricts certain things only in multiplayer.

I haven't try it in multiplayer since I began to play in S-3D, almost a year ago. I'll try it.

EDIT: I've flown a little these days in multiplayer without problems.

I spent ages trying to get FB+AEP+PF to work properly in stereo with numerous drivers and gave up due to all the horrible artefacts (airfields and many ground objects drawn at screen depth etc). As a result I never bothered trying '46 in stereo, assuming it would be just as bad. Thankfully I saw this thread and have just spent several extremely enjoyable hours blowing stuff up in glorious 3D :). It's a shame that you have to disable hardware shaders, but very much worth the sacrifice. Even the menus work perfectly in 3D so on the arming screen, for example, the image of your plane is 3D while the surrounding options are all flat and easy to read.

The only remaining problems I've noticed are:

1. Some very minor clipping at the sides of the screen - no big deal.

2. The icons (the text labels above each plane giving its type and range) are drawn at screen depth rather than at the depth of the object they describe, but these can be turned off.

3. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the dot representing a distant aircraft is drawn at screen depth. On my system these dots continue to be drawn when the aircraft is at medium range (in addition to the 3D model) so when I focus on a medium range aircraft it appears to have a dot either side of it (actually a single dot at screen depth in the center of the aircraft). Do the rest of you get this medium range dot problem?...and does anyone know of any settings which might eliminate it?

Cheers,
DD

P.S. For those interested, I've just uploaded 15 IL2:Sturmovik 1946 3D screenshots to the MTBS gallery or you can dowload a zip file containing 70 screenshots in jps format from here:

hi gents
I'm planning to buy the download version of IL2:1946 from Ubisoft (due to this thread) to play in S3D. Could anyone confirms whether it has Starforce or which scheme do they use for CP ? Or which version is the safest (without harmful CP measure)? Many thanks.

I have boxed version of IL2:1946 installed and couldn't find traces of starforce but whether it uses some other measures I do not know.

Same here. I don't think that it can be elminated through settings. Maybe the people that is further developing mods for il2 (like the 6dof mod) could fix that if they would have any interest in stereo-3D.

By the way, as general hint, remember to have Vertical Synchronization ON. Some weeks ago I loaded il2 after some time and found that stereo-3D was a total mess! Unplayable!. Hopefully, It was only that vert. sync. was off.
