I'll be inheriting a Samsung Galaxy S3 and was thinking of using it as a low-cost VR toy.
What are some good VR app recommendations? Headset recommendations? Controller recommendations?
I have no idea where to start, and I've found very little online that's specific to the Galaxy S3. I'm trying to keep this as low-cost as possible.
Thanks!

Galaxy S3 being 4.8 inch AMOLED is smaller for color cross. I would suggest go for Cardboard from Google.
http://www.amazon.com/Cardboard-Complet ... +cardboard
is cheap and working at $14. Read reviews and satisfy your soul.
I would not suggest plastic builds like color-cross it breaks immersion by showing borders around screen.
For Apps here goes best of 2015 list.

Some carefully chosen good app list by Maker Google it self.

Do some surfing around for controllers people in general not happy with whatever controller they got.

Thank you, Dilip! That's really helpful.
Are there any compatible plastic headsets that are supposed to be pretty good? I may be demonstrating VR to kids, who may be a bit rough with something made of cardboard.

You are welcome
4.8 inch is in particular smaller size for any plastic builds if you are looking for full immersion means don't see border of your device.
To use color cross effectively i would suggest 5.7" or 6" phablets.
If you are worried about sturdiness go for EVA versions but they are little costly.

If you are ok with borders around screen which will in turn give you tunnel vision and break immersion.
