Problems with Seperation

Post by Valez »

I can't get decrease separation enough to get the SHOCT lines to overlay.
Looking at near objects is very uncomfortable, looking at objects that are farther away is ok.
I tested this in Skyrim, Antichamber, L4D2, Dear Esther.

I did the following:
  • - adjusted SHOCT lines to center of each eye
this is really very hard to do and involves much guessing for me

    - adjust separation while lining one line up with a far away object
this is where I don't get the lines any closer together, I can't decrease the separation any more
there is still a significant gap between both lines

    - adjust convergence
    no problem here

My IPD should be arround 60-61 mm, I have the A cups in the Rift and the display all the way in.

Is there anything I did wrong or I can try?
Are there similary experiences for some people with an IPD like mine?

This issue unfortunately "breaks" the whole experience for me.

On a side note:

wouldn't it be possible to provide "good enough" standard values for the applications that would fit most people?

First, it's not necessary for the SHOCT lines to have absolute perfection, though we are working on ways to make this process easier.

Now, when picking an object in the far distance, you want to align it with both lines, not just one line. So let's say the distant object is a light bulb, you want that bulb to be under the line in both eyes, not just one. Does that help?

Hi Neil,

thanks for your reply.
Yes, im already trying to allign both lines over a far away object.
But as much as I am trying, I can't decrease separation enough to allign both lines.
I still have a 3D effect, so I guess decreasing the separation more should be possible.

Just so I'm clear, what is happening is you've aligned each red line with each of your eyes. However, the objects are outside the range of the lines, so you are trying to decrease separation to compensate?

Which game are you adjusting? It's possible that the separation is moving too slow to easily see. Just hold down the F2 key to reduce separation and watch carefully. It's best to do these adjustments with the HMD off so you can see everything on the screen.

Yes, each Shoct line should be alligned to the midle of my eyes.
After that I am looking for a far awy object, like the radio tower in Dear Esther at the start.
I allign one line with the tower by lloking at it (i already have the headset of and use the mouse for this) and
reduce separation and reallining the line alternating.
The separation decreasing is very fast, but it stops at a certain point before I alligned both lines on the radio tower.

I have the same problem in all games I tried so far (Dear Esther, L4D2, Skyrim and Antichamber).

I'll try to make a screenshot.

First I allign both lines with the tower:

After that convergence is all over the place:

Now I adjust convergence:

Now separation is very off:

After this position I cant reduce separation any further:

On a side note:
An option to post images smaller than they are would be really cool.

I think your images are reversed. Try hitting F6 and going through the process again with this game.

If you upload images to the gallery (http://www.mtbs3d.com/gallery), you can use the gallery provided BBCODE to insert thumbnailed images.

Thank you, updated my post with previews.

Swapping the eyes works, it lets me allign both lines.

But I am a bit confused:

Pressing F2 should decraese the seperation, that means that the left camera should go more to the right
and the right more to the left or am I wrong?

You are correct. However, it's the visual relationships you need to pay attention to. Looking at the most distant objects with your HMD off, as you increase separation, the object in the left eye should go to the left, and the object in the right eye should go to the right. When dealing with objects up close, there is a point where this behavior gets reversed and this creates the out of screen experience (still applicable with HMDs by the way).

Ok. Maybe this is something that could be mentioned in the readme. Seems the fastest way to determine wether the eyes are swapped or not.
