Samsung unveils 70-inch 'Ultra Definition' 240Hz 3DTV

Post by gisabun »

"Want to really impress your guests at your holiday party this year? This should do the trick: Samsung’s 70-inch “Ultra Definition” 3DTV.

Developed with oxide semiconductor TFT technology and a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, Samsung is touting the monster display as the “world’s first” 70-inch ultra-def 240Hz LCD panel. It’s difficult to think of any others like this, so they might just be right."

WOW!!! :o

It's good to see some progress here. I do hope that they release a display with similar design to the one in the picture. The very thin bezel makes this unit look really nice. I don't know why the TV manufacturers keep on insisting on putting a 3-5 inch bezel around the displays. Maybe for speakers, but they should just stop putting speakers in TVs IMO.

A flat screen TV is like a picture frame, having a bezel is more stylish than a picture hanging out of nowhere.
Also I think if the bezel isn't large enough, you need to make the screen less thin in order to provide more structural support.
Since TV manufacturers seem to be on a race making for the thinnest possible TV, I guess bezels have to be there.

ok that is some inpressive resulution...

isn't that the 2k resulution commonly used in digital Cinemas?

That thing would definetly give a good picture, if there where content for it (I haven't seen a 2k blue-ray until now).

But 3D gaming have to rock on this size and quality...

Wow! Love the tech and specs! It's great to see some definite progress in this area.
Since samsung also makes lcd-panels for many other manufacturers of lcd-tv's/monitors it shows promises for the future.

maybe backwards progress (square pixels instead of nice pixels).

1080p source -> 720p imager is also lot better than 720p -> 1080, o 2k.

I'm not sure this is entirely true. The reason why 1080p source -> 720p looks good is usually because you are using a smaller size screen and it's like an artificial FSAA. I would prefer a slightly blurry image that I can't see the pixels then being able to see the pixels.
Have you ever seen a PN50C450?
I think that a lot of TVs have the default for sharpness up far too high, trying to make the picture look higher resolution then it is which causes a lot of issues.

Other than hooking up to computers, what's the point? Source material is at best 1920x1080. No larger TV standards even exist yet do they? When they do will this TV work with them (other than your QHD Blu-Ray+ player downscaling to 1080p and then this TV upscaling back to its native.)
