A little OT, but its interesting to see that 3d printing apparently is now a viable way of creating lenses, as in

If lenses can be done, I wonder if custom mirrors can also be created now using 3d printing type methods?

Hello WiredEarp,

It is kind to send this information but I had just enough money to buy blocks of acrylic of 2 inches thick and other stuff like a powerfull router with the cutting tools. Hopefully, I could show the final result if the machine is ready to use. The machine that I've been using until now was extremely rude for fine machining and I could not have the proper optical result, there was too much vibration from this wooden machine. Wood is not so stable.

About Edmund-optics: I usually buy from EO but for custom build I have to pay the price! ... And if it is not the optics that you really want ...... :cry:

Maybe a group purchase if I can find enough interest.

I've tested my machine and it works very well. While spinning the cylindrical plexiglas blank, the Router index arm stays steady, although it took a long time per layer to feed a 200 mm lens (78,7 inch). I was able achive my first working monoscope which acts like a close-up telescope, focal point is only 25 cm (9.8 inch). The monoscope has 8 lenses in total. 5 large pmma lenses (homemade) and 3 small closeup filters (purchased). The fov of the monoscope is 145 degrees! and throws a sharp image from center to borders because of the intermediate image plane. The intermediate image plane is essential for better image quality. Bulky but it is first step before manufacturing smaller and wearable optics. Fitting this property onto a compact 180 deg hmd, it seems to be promising. Stay tuned.

Hi Hannibalj2,

The biggest lens is 7,8 inch (20 cm). It was used to test the precision of the machine and it's really a beauty. I cannot wait to go a step further (19,3 inch or 50 cm diameter). But the most essential task is to manufacture freeform optics, molds for curved mirrors etc. Without the machine I cannot make any optics needed for the ultimate compact 180 deg hmd. Fingers crossed.

corona and personal issues pushed me to pospone the project. Everything is on paper, machine is lined up. Now it is only a matter of time to get things done. My apologies for this long delay.

because of someone of my family passed away and time management issues I will soon update the different possibilities for FULL FOV with optics without too much image quality loss. Meanwhile every vr attention goes to Meta and Apple which is a good thing. Vr is still developing for the masses. Currently I educated myself in cast mirror, diamond turning and achromatic polymer materials. Thanks for your interest and for replying.
