iZ3D + Elsa Revelator support?

Post by efbiaye »

Hello ev1,

I have been browsing this board for a while, but couldn't find any definite answer to my questions.

Basically, I'm considering buying Elsa Revelator shutter glasses and would like to know if by any chance they would work with my setup.

OS: Vista x64 (and XP32 as my secondary OS)
Displays: 24" CRT (Sony FW900) capable of displaying 120Hz (conneced to my PC via DVI > VGA > BNC cable); Dell LCD 2408wfp (connected via DVI > DVI)
Card: EVGA 8800GTX
CPU: Q6600

I currently use iZ3D's anaglyph output, but as you all know, it leaves much to be desired. Since I can but Elsa's glasses for around $20, I wanted to know if by any chance they are supported?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The NVIDIA solution should work for you when their drivers and branded LCD shutter glasses are out. Or, you can look at a completely new S-3D display solution.

Hi,

The Sony 24" CRT FW900 has a maximum horizontal deflection frequency of 121 kHz. This is at the lower end of the range for a top end monitor, especially compared to other Sony monitors like the 21'' Dell P1130 at 130 kHz.

This limitation means there is a trade-off between maximum supported resolution and scan rate.

If you want the maximum supported resolution of 2304 x 1440 then the scan rate will be 80 Hz - which is substandard for general 3d viewing.

According to the user manual specifications these are your best baseline options in 16:10 format.

1920 x 1200 , 85+ Hz , 107 kHz

1600 x 1024 , 85+ Hz , 91 kHz

Despite this situation, I personally would like to own a Sony FW900 for 3D shutterglasses viewing.

Personally I am disappointed with Sony for not pushing the trinitron technology further.

I would have improved these monitors in the following ways.

[1] Bigger screens
[2] Better video bandwidth for 3D
[3] Faster phosphors to eliminate ghosting
[4] Putting the aperture grille wires horizontally for extremely high pixel density in 3d landscape viewing mode.

Thanks. :)

Thx for your response so far.

Neil, I don't trust Nvidia too much. Since, as you mentioned, they have plan to release their own shutter glasses, I don't think they would be willing to promote or more to that matter, even support any 3rd party glasses... same goes for CRT displays. (Only dinosaurs use them apparently...)

If you look at their previous press releases concerning their "newly (re)invented" 3d technology, only Nvidia's partners' technology is mentioned... (
Time will tell :-)

Budda, I'm not planning to play at full display res ;) On day-to-day basis I use it 1920x1200x85Hz (it will even work at 100Hz if connected via VGA (not BNC) cable. But basically, I'm willing to sacrifice res vs. 120Hz refresh rate if necessery.

I've noticed that latest iZ3D drivers have shutter glasses support (though at beta stage), but do they actually work with any shutter glasses available in the market? (The shutter glasses thread in 3d software support wasn't exactly too helpful on that). How about E-D glasses, I think they are pretty popular?

It looks like dinosaurs have a weird liking for brilliant, high contrast, true colored, sharp images at very high refresh rates, extremely low power comsumption and all this at cheap prices... really cheap. Who knows why...

crim3, well said, well said ;)

Anyway, I decided to answer my own thread, since eventually I decided to buy Elsa glasses.

I made them work nicely under WinXP, using latest Stereo3D drivers for XP 162.50.
And that's where Sony FW900 really shines - 1280x800@140Hz (absolutely no flickering visible), or 1400x900@120Hz (still very very good).

Unfortunately, at this stage the shutters don't work with the latest iZ3D drivers (1.09). Hopefully iZ3D will solve the synchnonization issue some day and people will be able to enjoy S3D with the best drivers out there :)

I have the Revelator as well, but at the moment the only option is to manually control it via a custom made hardware box or serial port connection. (Or downgrade your GPU + OS)

I've got some PIC Microcontrollers here, maybe I should have a play with the glasses...
