Z800 + Vista

Post by Anton »

I borrowed some eMagine Z800 HMD goggles from a friend of mine at work, and I have been trying to get them working under windows Vista 32bit.

I installed the newest Forceware (175.16) from their website, along with the latest stereo drivers (174.76) that I found there. This didn't work for me (I am unable to find any way to get anything but anaglyph to show up in the 3D Stereo CPL) and have had no success getting anything to show up in 3D. So I tried installing the drivers that Nvidia has linked from the stereo driver page (174.74 Beta) and still had no success.

Is there anyone who's gotten this HMD to work in Vista? If so, how?

I have a Geforce 8800 GT video card that I'm trying to work with.

I don't think its possible to use that headset in Vista. The newest Nvidia drivers only support the Zalman Trimon 3d monitor at this point in time. With other monitors it defaults to anaglyph mode. The Z800 should work in XP with the old nvidia drivers (93.14, I believe) but then those drivers won't work with an 8800GT. I know some people here found a registry hack that would allow you to use the Z800 with a 8800GT, but not in Vista. Sorry, but I think you may be out of luck.

As far as I know there is only one HMD currently on the market that works with Vista and thats the VR920 (using Vuzix-stereo drivers). It also works in XP and any video card. There is the iz3D 22" 3D monitor which supports both XP/Vista and 8800-series cards with their own driver. Neither of these solutions will work with the nvidia stereo 3d driver under Vista 32-bit. The Zalman will work only in Vista 32-bit and with the newest nvidia stereo 3d drivers. So you either have to dual-boot with XP, or purchase a newer solution that works with modern hardware.

Thanks for the reply. I'm disappointed to hear that the glasses won't work with my gaming machine, but I've got a media server thats still running XP, so I'll give them a shot there.

little update:

If you count in the beta drivers from Iz3D (HMD output) you can power TDVisor with it. The Z800 won't work, because that driver needs 2 outputs to work.

If you have access to an older PC with Geforce 7 and xp you could try to run it on that one.

Go here and get the vista drivers

http://www.3dvisor.com/support.php

You cant use the new Nvidia drivers because the Z800 is not made by Zaleman (some monitor produce with poor business ethics)

so you need to get older drivers

I use 162.50 and the stereo 162.50 drivers that you download from mtbs3D

You will have to do some directory tweaks to get it to work and there is a thread about that here.

Finally, if it is ok with your friend, I would invest at least a few hours in tweaking the color and brightness in both the Z800 labtool program and in your nvidia control panel. The difference in picture quality will be like from sh*t to chocolate.

And you need a 7xxx card from Nvidia. 8 and 9 wont work.

The z800 is the best entertainment thing I have ever bought hands down. But it took me almost a year of tweaking it to make it what it truly is; breathtaking.

p.s. I run XP and have never tried Vista

There is also a version of the Z800 with 2 VGA inputs: http://www.vrealities.com/z800dualpro.html

Oh I heard rumours that it existed, but didn't find evidence.

But look at the price... compared to TDVisor it's heavyly overpriced right now - and that is with the prototype price of TDVisor...

The Z800 was much cheaper once before, too...

Registry hack

Post by soberauer »

There's lots of mention of a registry hack, but no-one's telling what it is... in case anyone wants to know, I think it's this: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NvCplApi\Policies] "ContextUIPolicy"=dword:00000001

i believe you can also just buy the double vga input circuit board from tek gear for something like $650 if you already have a visor.
