2080 Ti 22gb vram mod for 3d vision?

Post by treeeddd »

Any sort of benefit to modding the 2080ti to 22gb vram for 3d vision? Does 3d gaming use more vram on newer titles?

I just found out about this mod recently. Ebay selling one for about $530, but could probably do a best offer of $450, as someone on reddit told me. Considering how much lower the prices are for used 2080ti and the cost of 2gb memory chips ($170 for 11 of them), I think it's worth it if you are vram limited.

I do a great deal of stable diffusion work, the 2080ti is a beast for it, considering the price/performance and undervolting capabilities. I'm constantly running into out of memory errors. I would have to buy a 4080 16gb or a 3090 24gb, but are still very expensive. I could do nvlink, but I'm unsure if the total vram usage of both are are utilized as one. the 3090 should get cheaper due to the release of the super series, so probably hit $600 soon.

I have to learn how to resolder the memory chips first, so will need some practicing before I attempt it.

What are your thoughts? Worth doing or just get a 3090. FYI, the 3070/3080 can also double the vram if the bios supports it.

2080ti is reaching end of life. I’d say buy a eBay second hand 30 series.

well if you are not an expert at soldering this would not be a good idea, too many things could go wrong and you will have totake the old ones out.. but if this mod is already done maybe not a bad idea.. I have a 2080ti and it works like a charm.. I use it mainly for VR it works fine there..

I’d say buy a eBay second hand 30 series.
The 20 series rtx series is still so relevant due to it's machine learning capabilities, which the 2080ti performs as good as the 4070, due to the 4070 using smaller memory bus width. price/performance is still pretty good for the 20 series as the 30 series will become more mainstream.

Just for machine learning stuff, 2x 2080ti can outperform a 4080, which price/performance is better too for 2x 2080ti.
It might be possible to find a used Quadro that will perform well
workstation gpus are still pretty expensive, they pretty much use the same dies as the gaming gpus but with more vram. Being able to mod more vram is all I really need. 3090 still pretty expensive, considering a 4070ti super is about the same price. 2080ti are getting under $300 now, that is an awesome price for it's performance in machine learning capabilities.
well if you are not an expert at soldering this would not be a good idea
I sort of want to get into electronic repairs, so it's the natural path to do this kind of work.
I use it mainly for VR it works fine there..
I want to get into VR as well, good to know the 2080ti is up to it. I find that the 3090 or 4080+ are going to be more suited towards high resolution VR gaming. The way gpus are priced now, just seems out of reach for the vast majority of people wanting good VR gaming.

I don't think modding 2080ti with extra vram would be a good idea. You can get a 30 series card and it works just fine with 456 and above drivers, with 3D Fix Manager tool to restore full 3D functionality. As 3DNovice and The_Nephilim mentioned above, it's not worth the risk and may not yield more performance for games. If your main use case is not gaming then maybe, but again why not using newer more capable cards. If you are gamer, most games would be fine with 11GB vram on 2080ti.

I don't think so, I don't think the 2080ti GPU is really fast enough to be bottlenecked by VRAM in most cases. Even in 4k.

unless you are really good at that kind of thing, think it's fun, and it makes monetary sense. I'd just sell it and buy a titan rtx which is slightly faster and has 24gb of vram.

I also owned the Quadro RTX 6000. But, because you cannot overclock it or raise power limit without soldering a resistor. It's about as fast as a 2080 ti while being about as expensive as a 4080 USED. I do not recommend this solution unless you also need it for workstation purposes.

If you're trying to use the last "Official" supported hardware. Titan RTX with NVLINK is the fastest. I have one computer with this for this purpose. For a few games that are not updated or do not work with GEO-113d

Otherwise the newer GPU's smoke it.

I will try 2080ti in nvlink to see how it does with machine learning stuff. With 5000 rtx release at the end of the year, not sure if I want to go with anything 4000 series. thousand dollar gpus are the only option for high vram and decent performance, 4080 is still overpriced. I'd definitely jump on a 3090 if they come down to the $500-600 range, could be real soon if everyone goes for the 4070ti super 16gb. And the 4070 super aren't selling it seems at $600, which is suppose to be as fast as a 3090 in gaming. Machine learning, the 3090 is better. 22gb 2080ti is still tempting, I have to at least try it.
