Anthem is on sale, amazing game and almost perfect in 3D

Post by skyrimer »

Anthem is currently 85% off at 8.99, it's lowest ever at https://www.origin.com/esp/es-es/store/ ... -selection

I bought the game out of curiosity and found it a masterpiece. Currently 31h played mostly doing the main story and side missions and I think I've still quite a few hours left, and it's all you could ask of a Bioware game, great story, cool missions, very interesting characters, unexpected plot twists, tons of lore, and graphics to die for. It also has some surprisingly good combat, four different lancers/armors with different combat abiities and lots of customization. The game can be soloed 95% of the time by selecting private session, and missions are perfectly doable on your own. I only had to go freeplay aka multiplayer hub world once or twice for a few missions. Multiplayer raid missions are hit and miss, sometimes you get kicked of the mission and lose your progress, they are still pretty cool and all have a decent story and fully voiced dialogues. Cons of the game is a bit of a lack of variety on environments / missions, but still since they are fully voiced and with interesting plots, they are still good.

Now the game works almost perfect in 3D 99% of the time with the existing fix, the only issue is that sometimes the sky has some weird distortion mostly on evening or dawn environments. It's perfectly playable though. On the other hand, the game has some of the most impressive graphics in 3d i've ever seen. I've posted a TON of pics on the discord for anyone who wants to give it a look. In the game you're flying Iron Man style most of time, and in 3D this really shines, since you're getting amazing vistas at high altitude in 3d all the time.

So highly recommended game and even more at that price.

Thank you for your feedback. I have the game, maybe I will give it a try if I find some time (very scarce at the moment).
In the meantime, could you share the link to the discord where you posted pictures from Anthem ?

Thank you in advance !

Hmmm, maybe I'll pick it up then. I was going to, the graphics and gameplay look really good but I got a bit dissuaded by reviews which mention repetitive missions and lack of gear variety but I mean at that price it's likely worth if just for a few hours of beautiful scenery.

There was also news announcement about a month ago that they're working on revamping skill/item/mission systems so maybe it'll bring the game up to where it should be.

Games currently being completely reworked. Interesting take on it considering its been widely panned by .. well nearly everyone.
I skipped it due to hearing some concering things like how you would do more damage with the default weapons than anything you could find actually playing the game among other things.
I'll probably just wait and see what their reworking of the game brings.

Yeah I heard about the reworking, but that could also mean some serious graphics changes that would need an improved fix. Also I was afraid that the game could be canceled at any moment, so I just gave it a go and pretty happy with it.

About weapons, there're 5 or 6 different ones that you can either craft or recieve by completing missions, they're fine for me to get them like that, and they are leveled so you can't keep older weapons for long.

The game also has an interesting combo system, we're there are primers and detonators, like an ice grenade than then you combo with a missile, pretty cool, so there's some depth with which weapons and abilities you use.

Can you help me understand the Origin pay scheme? For 8.99 you can play the game as often as you want, anytime and anywhere but for 4.99 you can play for up to 10 hours a month and for 14.99 you can play it unlimited the same as the 8.99 price?

Kinda feels like I'm in a casino with Origin.

No, the subscription lets you play ANY game during the time of the subscription. I think the newer titles have the 10h restriction on the lower sub, but older games (Which I thought Anthem was) you can play unlimited. So if you want to just play a game once and you can squeeze it in a month, it's sometimes cheaper to pay the subscription.

Fortunately I caught wind of the Origin sale and finally picked up my own copy of Anthem (among a few other games as well. T'was a good sale!), so I can properly support my fix going forward... can't say I'll ever look forward to working on a Frostbyte engine fix, though, but I like Anthem enough that I'd make a serious attempt at it at the very least.

Glad to see it's getting some love from the community now, instead of everyone waiting on the rework. I mean, it's fine that some people are, but it would be a shame if everyone did because I honestly enjoyed every minute of my playtime with it in it's launch day state (well, minus more than a few crashes and bugs, but not so much to ruin the game as a whole). I just don't really spend a lot of time on the endgame portion on most games, so I didn't get burnt out on the content drought like some, and thought the campaign itself was worth the price of admission. There's also the possibility the rework may never happen, and I would think anyone that gets burned from waiting is probably not going to want to experience the game in it's state at that time, so better to check it out now than potentially never.

Rework as in EA rework or 3D fix rework by you?

Thanjks for the heads up guys, I bought it and indeed it looks awesome and looks fun to play.

Thanks DJRK for this awesome fix as usual!

One question, why [PresetConversation] during conversations and cutscenes needs to enable depth of field in options to working ok?

I don't like Depth of field and convergence is too long in cutscene (around 1 I think) for me

It's been almost 2 years since I worked on the fix, so I can't remember too many specifics, but as per the instructions I posted on the blog:
"For best results, leave the Depth of Field setting enabled. The effect is very minor in the game, and is used as a trigger for the custcene & conversation convergence preset"

So it's up to you whether you want to use it or not, I did include some keybinds that you can use to manually switch between low and high convergence (F1 and F2 respectively) as an alternative, though you might want to edit the convergence values (and perhaps which keys/buttons to use) to your own preference. I personally do not like DoF either, but one thing I hate more than DoF is having to manually switch convergence values, so in this case I much preferred to keep it on, but different strokes for different folks.

Thanks for the explanation and indeed the dof effect in this game is very minor in this game!

How is performance in this game? Is the CPU core bug a (big) issue here?

I believe there were significant frame drops on my system even on low setting. That's one of the reasons I was looking forward to this update. IIRC lowering res helped.

I installed the game and tried paying for about 30-40 minutes. It ran smooth as butter. 60 fps and fluid feel. The fix is a real showcase for 3d vision. Just WOW! Glad I got this. Will report back if I encounter any performance issues later on in the game. Note that I am playing on 1080p with all settings ultra.
