Has Steam Deck saved 3d gaming?

Post by skyrimer »

So I was thinking that the new Steam Deck is shipping with Steam OS, a Linux based OS that comes with proton to make Windows games work. They key here is that it uses DXVK to convert DX12 games to Vulkan. That's of no use to us, however if Steam Deck is truly successful, I can imagine many games could start shipping with Vulkan directly together with DX12 to improve compatibility with Steam Deck, or maybe even adding Vulkan to improve support for old games. Now that's where we could hugely benefit of Steam Deck success, and perhaps we could start thinking on finally moving to 30XX cards.

The good thing is that at least pre-orders have been hugely successful, and in the US they're already at Q3 2022, so it's looking good. I've pre-ordered the 64gb version, let's see how it goes, since Yuzu or Cemu don't have 3d compatibility, I plan to play all those games on the Steam Deck.

Another good point with linux is that it is possible to create a stereo driver directly into intel and AMD graphics driver the same way 3Dvision was. But not for nvidia as they do not provide any opensource driver or any doc/resources allowing to build one easily.
But at the end we're stuck at the same point: we need full time paid devs. And so a kind of stereoscopic digital gaming association or company who did what mainstream company abandoned to do.
One idea could be to convince a lot of the stereoscopic clubs that are here all around the wolrd. Of course it means that we will have to pay on a regular basis.

Unfortunately with windows games runing on linux, most of modern MMO and multiplayer competitive games do not run properly or with the risk to be ban due to the way anti-cheat modern softwares works.
Whatever we are facing the same issue when playing this kind of game with a fix or a stereo driver like dridef was doing. And as this kind of game receive constant updates they also require constantly to redone the fixes.

Theres a joke somewhere in here about a self-contained VR set with a tripple-fan-cooled custom AMD processor on top of your head.

I think 3D games should be kept, and there are other fun games, such as the recently released Lost Ark, which is very popular
