YouTube 3D is broken

Post by Matthew »

With YouTube, it now uses HTML5 with all videos except those that use features that aren't supported by HTML5.

But there is a problem with this: HTML5's stereoscopic 3D feature is not supported by Internet Explorer. And even if it were, I don't know if it supports modes other than quad-buffered output (which is generally only supported by shutter glasses systems).

For an example of this, see these two videos on my channel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMdlJ1CqmE8

EDIT: I just found that both these videos actually do work. But many others don't. See my second reply.

I have two questions:

1. Is there any way to explicitly make YouTube use Flash instead of HTML5?

2. Does HTML5's stereoscopic 3D feature allow for modes other than quad buffering, such as interleaved? In other words, if you use a browser (such as Firefox) that supports it, or if Internet Explorer were to add support for it, would you be able to use those modes?

First question: why are you using Internet Explorer?

Short answer: Because it's convenient that it's included with Windows.

I suppose I could use Firefox (which I used before I got my new computer). I'm a big supporter of free software, so I would be happy with that. But it's still unacceptable that it doesn't work with Internet Explorer. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a large percentage of people (if not the majority) use Internet Explorer.

And, like I asked, even if I were using Firefox, so that the HTML5 3D feature is supported, would it support modes such as interleaving? I've only seen mention of quad-buffered output (which, as I said, currently is generally only supported by shutter glasses systems).

I'm using Chrome. When I go to YouTube I see the Flash version and it does support interleave.

Also, IE usage has gone down a lot over the years. It's only around 25% or less now ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_shar ... mary_table ).

This is true with some videos, but not all.

I just checked and found that both of the videos I linked to (which I uploaded a while ago) actually do work -- use Flash -- after all.

But here's another one (not uploaded by me) that I've just tried, and it doesn't:

Yes, you are right. That video used HTML5 and is broken for me too.
