Standalone Left 4 Dead 2 crashing soon after launch

Hello,

Though running fine without Perception, my standalone version of Left 4 Dead 2 crashes (unfortunately, without a report) upon loading the menu. The culprit should not be my Perception copy as it was downloaded through the official site and runs fine with other compatible games, such as Skyrim. A couple minor details which are suspect: my comp was recently reformatted without much updating; and Perception is stored on a different partition than my OS. Also, I have yet to launch the game through Steam.
