Common stereoscopic video resolutions and bandwidth

Post by DmitryKo »

I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of video resolutions, display timings and video bandwidth which will be used for stereoscopic video and gaming in the near future, as well as some standard PC and HDTV resolutions and timings, and use it for future reference.

There are several types of timings listed in the table:

CEA-861 - standard HDTV timings, having 720 and 1080 vertical lines with p24, p25, p30, i50, i60, p50, p60, p100, p120 scanning; explicit definition
UHDTV - timings for UHDTV 4K and 8K broadcast modes (defined in CTA-861-E/F/G, supported in HDMI 1.4/2.0/2.1 standard)
HDMI 3D - timings for full-resolution stereo 3D modes (fp == "frame packing" (top-bottom), sbs == side-by-side) (defined in HDMI 1.4 standard)
CVT - standard computer monitor timings for CRT displays (defined by VESA Coordinated Video Timings formula and VESA Display Monitor Timing standard)
CVT-R, CVT-R2 - reduced blanking timings for fixed-resolution LCD panels (R2 defined in CVT 1.2).

Uncompressed bandwidth figures are for 24-bit RGB or 24-bit YCbCr 4:4:4 (divide by 1.5 for YCbCr 4:2:2, divide by 2 for YCbCr 4:2:0). Multiply bandwidth or pixel clock (HDMI) by 1.25, 1.5, or 2 for 30/36/48 bit RGB and YCbCr 4:4:4 modes)

HDMI 1.1-1.2 single link 3.96 Gbit/s (up to 165 MHz pixel clock; pixel rates over 74.5 Mhz, or transmission rates over 2.25 Gbps, require High Speed (Category 2) cable)
HDMI 1.3-1.4 single link 8.16 Gbit/s (up to 340 MHz pixel clock; pixel rates over 74.5 Mhz, or transmission rates over 2.25 Gbps, require High Speed (Category 2) cable)
HDMI 2.0 14.4 Gbit/s (up to 600 MHz pixel clock; pixel rates over 340.0 Mhz, or transmission rates over 10.2 Gbps, require Premim High Speed (18G) cable)
HDMI 2.1 42.66 Gbit/s (up to 1200 MHz pixel clock; pixel rates over 600.0 Mhz, or transmission rates over 18.0 Gpbs, require 48G cable)
DisplayPort 1.1 5.184 or 8.64 Gbit/s (up to 1.62 or 2.7 GHz symbol rate per lane; reduced rate with long cables)
DisplayPort 1.2 17.28 Gbit/s (up to 5.4 GHz symbol rate per lane; reduced v1.1 rate with long cables)
DisplayPort 1.3-1.4 25.92 Gbit/s (up to 8.1 GHz symbol rate per lane)
Please note that the often-quoted 4.95/10.2/18.0 GBit/s figures for HDMI are the total symbol transmission rates - the effective data rate is 20% lower because of error-correction overhead (8B/10B encoding scheme is employed by most of the above standards, except HDMI 2.1 which uses 16b/18b).

DisplayPort 1.4 and HMDI 2.1 require mandatory VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) 1.2, which is a lossy low-complexity algorithm that has to 3:1 compression rate and supports 8/10/12/16-bit RGB and YCbCr video streams.

Re: Common stereoscopic video resolutions and bandwidth

Hi,
Very nice table.
Please note, however, that for the most used transmission way today (HDMI), you should count 10 bits transmitted per 8 bit component.
Gbps for 1080p60 becomes 1.485 Gbps per TDMS lane, and 4.455 Gbps in total (not 3.5 Gbps as stated).
I agree it does not apply to all transmission ways.

@DmitryKo: Does the new Thunderbolt connector offer us any additional 3D capabilities? Its supposedly 10Gbps, which makes it a little better than DP 1.1 (although it does support DP, so I am not sure what the difference is). Seems a whole lot better than HDMI, thats for sure. I saw a video with it pumping four 1080P video clips over a single cable. Pretty impressive.

I specifically stated that these are the bandwidth figures removed from the overhead caused by 10B/8B encoding scheme. Using total transmission rates makes no sense for the purpose of this table.

I do not have the access to the text of the standard, but I suppose that the ThunderBolt protocol uses a different physical layer (though similar to DisplayPort 1.1) with can encapsulate multiple DisplayPort and PCIe streams, and the 10 Gbit/s figure probably includes encoding overhead as well.
