3D mode disabled in 1080P and most resolutions

I have read all the other posts from people that have had this problem, but still cannot seem to get mine to work. I have also contacted the TriDef support team, but they just told me to get another graphics card. TV: Samsung HL72A650, PC:Intel core 2 duo@ 3.33, ATI HD 5850, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
Problem: 3D mode is greyed out when I set the resolution to 1080P or almost any other resolution besides 1280 x 1024 and 1366 x 768 (which work flawlessly for 3d, except for the size). I know it is not my tv, because Avatar on 360 works perfectly at 1080P (or does it output 720P?). So, it has to have something to do with my pc.
I have scaling disabled in CCC, HDMI is plugged into correct input in TV (HDMI 3), and have renamed input to PC on the tv. Not sure if this helps, but I can get the tv to go into 3D mode at 2 other resolutions (not 1080P or 720P), but there is no 3d effect. I ran the test image from TriDef, but, instead of a smooth rectangle, I saw checkerboard.
Can anyone help with this? I really don't want to shell out the money for a new graphics card, so a way other than switching to NVidia would be best.
Thanks in advance
