I just saw a news service talk about a new service being offered to do 3D rapid-prototyping of optics. That may be of interest to people here. I have no idea of the costs involved.

Very cool. I remember raising this exact concept here (that optics could soon be 3D printed) only a year or so ago, and the possibility was generally dismissed ;_)

Starting at 500 usd, it is a good alternative (instead of casting, grinding milling etc.) but the lenses are not yet soo big for hmd's. It is good for fresnel and flashlight applications, although the future of this technology looks promissing.
