3D monitors: will they display 2D in portrait mode?

Don't know the first thing about S-3D? Just bought your first pair of 3D glasses? Trying to figure out what to buy? Post HERE!

3D monitors: will they display 2D in portrait mode?

Post by samssf »

Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but I'm curious about various 120hz displays I've looked at.

Most of them aren't flat, and are wider or heavier on the bottom. For example, the Alienware aw2310.

I know that these displays won't display 3D in portrait mode, but I'm wondering if they will display 2D images fine if rotated into portrait. I assume so, but want to get confirmation.

I'm also concerned that the weight imbalance would make it hard to get my monitor arm to hold it in the proper position. Thanks in advance for any info on this.
Current hardware:
- Epson Powerlite Home Cinema 1080 projector
- PS3
- Benq 24" G2400WD mounted on single monitor arm
- Antec P182 case
- Corsair 650W PSU
- ATI 5850 graphics card
- Gigabyte P55 UD3R motherboard
- Intel i5 750
- Retail copy OSX hackintosh / Windows 7
- Wireless XBox controller for PC
- G27 Racing wheel

Wish list / researching:
- nvidia gtx580 x 3
- Full water cooling (ek pumps, dual pump top, res, rx480 radiator)
- Corsair 800d or Silverstone Temjin TJ07-BW case
- Probably Alienware AW2310 displays (up to 3) or multiple projectors
- 3D glasses

TN panels won't look good in portrait, not even in 2d. You'd need IPS panels for that, and i don't know of any 120Hz IPS screens.

btw, why get 3d screens when you know you can't use the 3d mode? :) If you're only after the Hz you could get CRTs instead if you have the space. There IS a real difference that makes CRTs sharper for moving images(ie games). I'm not going to make this a full page post, but it's about LCDs "holding" the image in place for the entire frame while CRTs pulse them instead. This, combined with the persistence of vision inherent in our retinas makes CRTs sharper for moving imagery.

Thanks for the info... I didn't know that about portrait mode and TN panels.

Actually the reason I'm getting 120hz panels is for 3D gaming, but I want to be to rotate them into portrait orientation for work purposes.

So even if they don't look great, they'll still work in portrait, yes?

Yeah, you can rotate them for 2D. They will still look better in landscape, but you can do portrait, sure. Its just not optimal.
