Spectroniq S-3D LCD HDTV

Post by ssiu »

I've not heard of Spectroniq before until Neil mentioned it, but here is their CES press release: http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRel ... RN20080107

It is certainly exciting to see all these diverse S-3D displays popping up. This year we will have DLP, Plasma, and LCD S-3D HDTVs. The momentum is there.

They seem to have great partners (Sensio, KORD) from the S-3D movie perspective. I wonder how much their S-3D LCD HDTV with proprietary technologies will cost though (compared to an equivalent 2D LCD HDTV). The S-3D DLP HDTVs doesn't cost much extra for the S-3D part (only for the shutter glasses system); and it doesn't sound like the Samsung S-3D Plasma HDTVs will cost any more than a regular Plasma either (though details are sketchy). The Spectroniq cannot cost too much more than a 2D-equivalent HDTV, or it will not be competitive with the DLP and Plasma solutions.

There is not much detail on the Spectroniq website http://www.spectroniq3-d.com/; it does mention that it uses circular polarized glasses. I don't think it uses two LCD panels (like IZ3D monitors) as that would be way too expensive to be competitive.

This article has some more info on the Spectroniq HDTV: http://displaydaily.com/2008/02/01/spec ... -the-goal/

It is based on circularly polarizing, micro-polarizer technology licensed from Arisawa. http://www.arisawa.co.jp/en/product/3d.html

It's planned to be available summer 2008; price would be comparable to a high end Sony LCD HDTV of comparable size.

Kind of an interesting relationship. If you take a peek at DDD's shareholders, arisawa owns a decent share of DDD AND DDD sells one of their display solutions.
